What a wonderful start to the 18-19 school year! We have enjoyed getting to know your children both academically and personally. "Tell Me Something Good Tuesday" has been a wonderful way for our class to share things they are excited about or proud of in a listening circle. We also use that time to discuss our 7 habits and general topics improve ourselves and our classroom. This past month we have focused on showing empathy by "putting ourselves in someone else's shoes." Ask your child what it means to show empathy towards another.
In social studies, we are wrapping up our unit on Chicago. We have learned a lot about the first settlers, For Dearborn, the Chicago River, The Great Chicago Fire, our two world's fairs, and things that make Chicago unique today. We look forward to showing you what we have learned at our Chicago Expo on Wednesday, October 17th from 2:00-3:30. Invitations will be coming home soon!
During writing, we have been learning about informative writing by sharing information we have learned about the Chicago River. We will also be writing more pieces, being sure to include at least three facts about a topic. Editing and evaluating our pieces will be part of the writing process.
Reading workshop has included our Launching Unit- a taste of the different genres and strategies we will be focusing on across our later units. In October, we will be learning about the 6 Signposts many authors include in fiction books as well as how to find and support the main idea in nonfiction materials.
We have just completed Chapter 3 in math, addition with and without regrouping, and will be reviewing subtraction with and without regrouping in Chapter 4 next month.
Conferences are coming up in October. We look forward to sharing information about learning that has occurred so far this trimester.
