In reading class, we have been launching our new reading curriculum. We have been reading a variety of picture books, poems, and nonfiction articles in order to learn about making connections, sharing our thoughts through small group discussions, and reflecting on our thinking through a reader's notebook. We will be finishing this unit in the next couple of weeks!
In Mrs. Danley's writing class, we have been writing narrative pieces with a strong focus. We are learning that our pieces have to have a clear beginning, middle, and end and include strong detail to help the reader picture our stories. We have also begun learning to share our writing in front of an audience by reading pieces aloud to our peers, an important communication skill.
Social studies has revolved around Chicago. We have been reading about and researching a variety of topics. Some of these have included: Fort Dearborn, The Columbian Exposition, What makes the Chicago River special, and the Great Migration. We have also had first hand experience on the river and Lake Michigan when touring both on our Wendella boat trip. The weather was great, and we had a blast. Our group even got complimented by the staff for such outstanding behavior!
Math class with Mrs. Danley has focused on reviewing throughout Unit 1. We will be starting Unit 2 through a workshop format. Small groups will rotate through various activities: independent work, teacher instruction, xtramath fact practice, and Khan Academy computer work.
We have all been earning a great deal of points using Class Dojo. We have set and achieved many goals based on our class behaviors. We hope to earn a party soon!
