What a wonderful month this has been! Aside from the snow on the last day, we enjoyed some nice weather for October!
In social studies, we finished our Chicago unit with a wonderful boat trip on the Wendella. We were able to tour both the Chicago River and Lake Michigan. We learned about architecture and were fascinated with how the lock worked to get us from the river to the lake. The weather was perfect and so was the behavior. The man running the tour information complimented our school.
We started our first science unit, Weather. We look forward to learning about different types of severe weather and will be making a weather forecast next month! Be on the lookout :)
In math, we finished our subtraction chapter, reviewing regrouping. Regrouping across zeros was the trickiest part. We also worked on one and two-step word problems with both addition and subtraction. Representing data with bar models is a great way to help us see whether we need to add, subtract, or both!
We are halfway through our nonfiction unit in reading. We have been learning about the different types of nonfiction(reference, literary, and biography) and different types of structures that author's use to give us information(description, chronological, problem-solution, compare/contrast, and cause and effect). We have also been learning about finding main ideas by looking at what different details have in common.
We finished our "Writing Community" unit by publishing and sharing a writing piece with our peers. We practiced both our speaking and listening skills. We were able to make positive, specific comments on things we noticed as papers were read to us. We have now just begin our "Personal Narrative" unit. We are learning about writing about real events that have happened in our lives by using our memories of special events in our lives.
In our Leader in Me lessons, we have been learning about our big rocks and our little rocks. We will also be developing goals next month in reading and math.
