What a busy month! Though we didn't have a full month of school, we managed to pack in a full month of work :)
In science this trimester, we finished out weather unit by building paper houses and experimenting with different ways to support the structure to prevent the roof from blowing off. We also created loud models using cotton to show the different shapes of clouds and the type of weather they bring. We finished our weather forecast videos which will be up and running sometime in January.
We also learned a bit about banking and the economy by performing a play. Links are provided on the page as well as embedded videos. The kids did a great synergizing by sharing speaking parts and helping with set design and even some filming.
In reading, we finished our nonfiction unit. We enjoyed learning about Christian the Lion and followed up by watching a documentary about his life as a pet and his reintroduction into the wild. We will be starting our fiction unit after the winter break.
We finished publishing our narrative writing pieces and will be presenting them to the class after break. This will enable us to practice both good listening and good speaking skills. We focused on writing about an important event in our lives, including a good lead and closing, and revising our work to add temporal words and phrases, showing descriptions, sensory details, and including some dialogue.
We finished chapter 7 in our math curriculum- learning more about multiplying numbers in the tens and hundreds by single digits. Students were allowed to use our multiplication charts as needed, but everyone is encouraged to continue memorizing multiplication facts to make division with and without remainders a more enjoyable experience.
We also focused on charting our lead measures in order to improve our reading and math skills. We will continue to work on our goals and will modify lead measures as needed.
I hope everyone enjoyed time off with family over winter break!
