Thank you so much to all the parents who volunteered and/or helped with the Halloween party! The kids had a GREAT time, and the adults did, too.
Danley Math: We have finished reviewing mental math in Chapter 2. The students have reviewed how to add number together, changing one into a number in the tens, and then adding or subtracting the change. We have learned about number bonds, rounding to the nearest 10's and hundreds, and the difference in accuracy when we use front-end estimation. We have also completed Chapter 3, focusing on the big idea: Greater numbers can be added the same way 2-digit numbers are added, with or without regrouping. We end the month by learning how to determine when regrouping is necessary during subtraction.
Danley Reading: We have been reading the novels, Fourth Grade Rats & Third Grade Angels by Jerry Spinelli. The students have been learning how to answer questions by writing in sentences and using key words form the questions in their answers. They have also supported their ideas with text evidence and are using new vocabulary words in context. Some students are also noticing signposts we learned last month- great job! We ended our unit by creating "book trailer" movies about each book. The kids had a lot of fun being "producers" by incorporating music and various types of video and background slides.
Danley Writing: We have completed our first narrative by inserting ourselves into the Chicago Fire(we were healthy survivors!). The class did a great job using their senses to make their experience during the Chicago Fire come alive for the reader. You will have to check them out during conference time! We are also editing our personal narratives in google docs by highlighting areas in which we want to add and areas in which we want to replace text with better detail or stronger verbs.
Content: We completed our study of Chicago History. The Chicago Fire seems to be the favorite topic with the two Chicago World's Fairs being a close second. We are now studying Chicago today with a focus on the North side neighborhoods. We ended the month still researching about what makes the North side neighborhoods different in the area of culture, architecture, and history.
