Danley Math: This month we spent time setting rules and expectations for our math class. We practiced daily routines by working with number and problem of the day as well as conversation starters for talking about how we solve math problems. In Chapter 1, we worked on counting and comparing numbers to 10,000. After our Chapter 1 assessment, we began discussing concepts in our next chapter, focusing on mental math.
Danley Reading: In reading, we have been working in our Launching Unit. We have established expectations for reading workshop, talking with partners, sharing in a whole group, and reading independently. Read alouds are used to model workshop concepts and our focus is on thinking about reading. We have also begun reviewing reading signposts with fourth graders and introducing those signposts to our third graders. They have been listening and reflecting on 6 signposts: Contrasts & Contradictions, Memory Moments, Aha Moments, Words of the Wiser, Again & Again, and Tough Questions.
Danley Writing: We have been writing narrative pieces in our notebooks utilizing "skill drills" and writing prompts to focus our small moment stories with a clear beginning, middle, and end. We have been emphasizing using our senses in our writing to help the reader have a richer experience.
Content: Our classroom has been studying Chicago history. The class has been learning about the early Native Americans, Marquette and Joliet, DuSable, Fort Dearborn, transportation, and immigrants. We will continue our Chicago study next month.
