Our caravan groups have been learning about map skills, including latitude and longitude and using the direction on a compass rose. They continue to travel and earn gold coins as they collect artifacts around the world. The students got to experience their first "fate cards" which include both good and bad experiences that affected their travels!
When working on the 7 Habits of Happy Kids, we have explored what it means to "Start with the End in Mind" and "Put First Things First." Ask your child what these habits mean to him/her.
The students continue to read their chapter books. We have been continuing to review closing rereading text to provide evidence. We have also reviewed summarizing by including main events. We have also started learning about the "signposts" found in fiction reading. Our first signpost is, "Contrasts and Contradictions." When you are reading and a character says or does something different from how they usually act or what you would expect, this is a Contrast and Contradiction. The students are learning to ask themselves, "Why would he/she do that?" We are working on interacting with the text by noticing and noting signposts as we read.
During writing, we are working on including good showing details in a narrative with a clear beginning, middle, and end. We watched a scene from A Christmas Story to review a small moment. We did a shared writing activity about how Ralphie acted. We then looked back into our piece to add more detail.
We continue to learn about researching our passions. The students participated in lessons on taking good notes as they research. Soon they will be working on "green light questions" to research and apply their note taking skills.
